Deadly Drought in Zimbabwe-4

Bad time for elephant birth

The clouds pass without rain. The status of the animals becomes increasingly precarious and elephants die in numbers. Weakened, the youngest are easy prey for predators. We saw some unpleasant scenes. This morning there was a calf, a few months old, stuck in the mud, still alive but half eaten by hyenas. It was necessary to shoot after obtaining permission from the Park Authorities. While returning from this mission, the behaviour of a solitary female elephant particularly agitated, caught our attention. The elephant had just given birth to a baby that was still wrapped in the placenta. Continue reading

More united zebras

This morning a zebra has been trapped by the mud after the crust of earth on which he had ventured suddenly brooked under its feet. It was not as difficult as an elephant, to rescue. Although a couple of hours were necessary before we managed to pull him out of the mud. What is noteworthy in this is, unlike elephants, the group of zebras stayed on to watch the whole operation and came to greet him immediately after his escape, integrating the survivor amongst them, almost celebrating. Deadly Drought in Zimbabwe-2

Captured by the sludge

Once out of the woods, the young elephant immediately began to frolic around, and then, after drinking and spraying herself with mud, curiously went to lie next to her dying mother. She stayedthere all the night long, huddled, motionless. In the morning she was still there, alive, though hyenas had come around the camp during the night. Atthis time of year drought has killed so many elephants that plenty food is readily available for all carnivores. Continue reading
